Local 139 training director wins national 'training excellence' award

PEWAUKEE – Daniel Sperberg, training director for Operating Engineers Local 139, is the recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Apprenticeship Training Award as presented by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. The award recognizes “overall excellence” in the Local 139 training and education program, which is jointly managed by the union and its signatory contractors.
Sperberg, who has served the union as training director since 2004, received the honor at an awards ceremony held by the International Foundation on Monday, Jan. 11, in Las Vegas. “It is truly an honor to receive this kind of national recognition for our training programs,” Sperberg said. “It is a measure of the hard work and dedication displayed by all members of our training staff.”
Local 139 Business Manager Terry McGowan said the award reflects a mindset among Local 139 instructors that the training they provide should be the best available to Operating Engineers anywhere in the United States. “I am very happy for Dan and his staff,” McGowan said. “It speaks to the commitment we make to our members so that they are successful on the jobsite.
“We were not informed that Dan was nominated to receive this most deserving award,” McGowan added. “So it was a pleasant surprise to learn that he had won it.”
The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans is a non-profit, educational association based in Brookfield. Founded in 1954, the group has approximately 35,000 individual members nationwide who represent some 8,400 organizations.
The 2010 Excellence in Apprenticeship Training Award is the second of its kind bestowed by the International Foundation. Among criteria judges considered for the award were the size of jointly managed apprenticeship training programs, the sustainability or growth of a program, how often curriculum in a program is updated, and whether those enrolled can receive college credit for the training they receive.
The Wisconsin Operating Engineers Skill Improvement & Apprenticeship Fund maintains the state-of-the-art, Joseph J. Goetz Jr. Training Center for apprentice and journey-worker Operating Engineers on a 400-acre site near Coloma. The school provides both classroom and field training and is affiliated with Fox Valley Technical College.
